What Is Backflow, and Why It Matters for Florida's Water Quality
Water in your plumbing is supposed to travel one direction: from the water main, into your property, and out through your fixtures. Backflow is what happens when that flow reverses.
It happens more easily than most people expect. A water main break, a fire hydrant opening down the street, or a pump running on your own property can drop the pressure in the line and pull water backward. Whatever that water has touched on its way through your system comes back with it.
What Is a Cross Connection?
A cross connection is any point where your drinking water lines meet something that is not drinking water. An irrigation system sitting in fertilized soil is a cross connection. So is a soda machine's carbonation line, a commercial dish sprayer, a boiler with treatment chemicals in it, and a pool fill line.
Most of these connections are perfectly safe as long as water only moves one way. The backflow preventer is what keeps it that way.
What Is a Backflow Preventer Assembly?
A backflow prevention assembly is a mechanical valve installed on your water line that only allows flow in one direction. You have probably seen one: the brass fixture near the water meter, often with two shutoff valves and four small test cocks on it. The most common types in Central Florida are:
